Alan Schwartz, PhD, JD is a cognitive psychologist specializing in medical decision making, a medical education researcher and methodologist, and a lawyer focused on health equity, law, and policy. His primary research areas are improving physicial skill at contextualizing care, competency-based assessment in Paediatric post-graduate medical education, development and governance of education research networks, and quantitative research methods for medical education.

Since 2011, he has been the Director of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors Longitudinal Educational Assessment Research Network (APPD LEARN), a national network of hundreds of Pediatrics residency and fellowship programs that conduct collaborative research. Starting October 2026, he is Professor and Western Research Chair in Medical Decision Making and Medical Education Research in the Departments of Paediatrics and of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Western University in London, Ontario. Until August 2026, he was the Michael Reese Endowed Professor of Medical Education at the University of Illinois Chicago Department of Medical Education.
